New GIS Application technology: HTML5 and Silverlight web browsers - Thursday, November 06, 2014

MarinMap is publishing new versions of GIS applications using HTML5 and Silverlight web browsers.

HTML5 (Hyper Text Markup Language, version 5) is the international standard for structuring and presenting content for the World Wide Web.  It runs on all web browsers and devices such as smart phones, tablets and desktop computers that use browsers.  The mapping interface is simple and easy to use.

Microsoft Silverlight plugin for web browsers

Microsoft’s Silverlight plugin has a set of GIS mapping features that are very similar to ESRI’s ArcView software, yet are available free within a web browser.  If you are familiar with ArcView or want to explore the many capabilities of query, graphic display, reporting and data export, we recommend using the Silverlight plugin.  Note that it is more difficult to learn than HTML5 browser.

You must have Microsoft Silverlight plugin installed AND enabled.  Click on this link to see if you have Silverlight installed and what version it is.  Silverlight runs within Internet Explorer versions 9, 10 and 11 as well as current versions of Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome browsers.  To see what plugins or add-ons are installed on your device, look under the Tools Menu and click “Add-ons”.

If you want to use the older webADF version until it is removed click Here.
