Description: This feature class depicts properties, structures, and landscaping elements that have been evaluated and designated as historic in Marin County or which have otherwise been assessed through a historic study. The polygons are distinguished from each other based on the type of historic designation the properties were assigned during these studies. These different designations include the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), the California Register of Historical Resources (CRHR), the California Historical Landmarks (CHL), and/or the California Points of Historical Interest (POI), as well as designations issued through the properties’ local governing jurisdictions (i.e., cities or towns). Historic resources listed in the NRHP, CRHR, CHL, and POI are also included on the Built Environment Resource Directory (BERD) maintained by the California Office of Historic Preservation (OHP); the majority of the resources depicted were identified via he BERD list for Marin County.Additional historic properties were then added to the streamlined BERD database, sourced from the following local inventories and registries: the City of Belvedere’s Designated Historic Properties List (City of Belvedere 2024);the City of Mill Valley’s Historic Resources Inventory Properties (Page & Turnbull, Inc. 2021);the City of San Rafael’s Historical/Architectural Survey Final Inventory List (Charles Hall Page & Associates, Inc. and San Rafael City Staff 1986); the City of Sausalito’s Citywide Historic Context Statement (VerPlanck Historic Preservation Consulting 2022); the Marin County Local Coastal Program Historic Study (Duthie et al. 1981); andthe OHP’s California Historical Resources website (OHP 2024).To make it easier to quickly assess which polygons represented which level of historic registration, the shapes were color coded to represent broad categories:Locations that are listed on or determined eligible for registration at the national level are colored in red;Locations that are listed on or determined eligible for registration at the state level are colored in blue; Locations that are listed on or determined eligible for registration at the local level colored in green; Listed or recommended historic districts are depicted in an opaque white overlay; andAll other locations (e.g., those documented but not eligible for listing) are colored in yellow.
