Hi all,

The latest news is that Marinmap’s budget for the upcoming year has been adopted. As it has been for perhaps the last dozen years, there are no increases to operating costs or revenue from dues. That is, except for the revenue decrease several years ago when the tiered dues were created. Marinmap continues to do a lot with a little.

Below is the list of projects Marinmap will be working on in the upcoming year. These are in addition to basic operations, service and assistance to members and the public, and minor projects and actions performed within the existing service contracts.

In looking at the last posting, I see it’s been too long since I’ve blogged. I’ll try to be more frequent in the coming year. But, I did give myself the chance to be reminded of a valuable lesson: save, save save your work! I wrote a blog a few weeks ago, editing within the blog space. After finishing, revising and reviewing, I hit “Save and Post,” and poof, off it went into the…well, wherever text goes when it is not Saved and Posted. Too bad, it was the best blog ever. It had subplots, recurring themes and village elders. I should have worked in a space where I could control periodic saves, like I am now. If this has happened to you, you know the feeling of anger and betrayal by your device and technology in general. You may also know the feeling of attempting a recreation is like making a pale copy. So instead, I waited a while, to reboot myself.  I already booted myself a lot after losing the two hours of work.

Meanwhile, Marinmap continues to serve and improve. We are about to post a new dataset, which...

A new Blog From Frank. There is a new Map Application from Lafco. The new Lafco Application has Annex and Deannexation information on it.  We als have an application to display Road Moratorium.  When a public street has been recently paved, local policy prohibits digging up that pavement for a specified time period, usually five years after date of paving.  Read More at  Road Moratorium

Hi all, As the members know, the budget was prepared, reviewed by the Steering Committee (that would be a quorum of every member agency), submitted to MGSA, and adopted. So we have a new set of projects, as well as the ability to complete some projects in 11/12 that are not finishing by June 30. It's a good budget, I think, with a modest set of projects and a few dollars set aside for a possible new orthophoto in the future. The July Exec Committee meeting is being cancelled because of its proximity between the holiday and a getaway Friday. I had already heard from a few people who couldn't make it and there was no business necessitating immediate action. Fred Vogler continues to keep the program glued together with his great team and maintenance efforts, as well as moving projects along he is tasked with. A big and ongoing thank you to the Matrix Team! Seth and I are working on a Road Classification project application that is actually already on the member side in draft, but we need to send out an explanation...

Hi
Just a note that Marinmap Exec Committee meets on Thursday. I will be reporting on a meeting I held with the County Surveyor and the rep from the Marin surveyor's group. Fred and I will report on a meeting with the County Assessor as well. And much much more!

Also, budget time is fast approaching, and I've agendized a kickoff.

See you there, or read all about it after the meeting notes are posted

A quick amendment to my last blog. I don't know if this happens to everyone, but I couldn't subscribe when I clicked the rss icon using Internet Explorer 9. Instead, it just took me to a page full of blog. However, when I used the Mozilla Firefox browser and clicked the rss icon, the top of the page displayed, "Subscribe to this page using..." with a selection of Microsoft Office Outlook, Google, My Yahoo, or Choose Application, and a "Subscribe Now" button. Very simple.

Funny that Microsoft's Internet Explorer has a problem with subscribing using Microsoft Outlook. Their new slogan: "We have met the irony and they are us." Use Firefox if you have this problem.

Hi All, Last Thursday was our monthly Executive Committee meeting. The EC is comprised of representatives from Novato (Heidi), San Rafael (Bill V), Larkspur (Hamid), Mill Valley (Jill), Sausalito (Todd), MMWD (Gavin), and the County (Laurie). As with all EC meetings, minutes are published on marinmap.org by pulling down the "Public Records" menu and selecting "Agendas, Minutes and Reports." Thursday's minutes will be coming soon (thanks again, Laurie!), but the January and prior minutes are posted. I won't recreate them in this blog, but here are a few notable items: - I have been in contact with the CPUC and PG&E, opening a dialog for sharing mapping data. Member agencies would greatly benefit by having PG&E's utility data included in marinmap's growing dataset. Although PG&E has exemptions from the Public Records Act, there is interest in making their mapping data available to the public. Meanwhile, it may be possible to access this data if only for public agencies' benefit for first response and agency...

Hi all. Here we are in 2012. Sounds almost like futuristic sci-fi. I remember going into the '70's thinking that it sounded like the space age. Now even "1984" is set in the past, so to speak. Anyway, may your space age be filled with good times and realized goals. Just think- we're heading into the teens again :) We had a Marinmap Executive Committee meeting last week. We'll be publishing the meeting notes soon, but in a nutshell: Community Base Map, with detailed shoreline data, due out any day via SDE. If you don't know about SDE, you're either not a member agency, or your Marinmap rep is using it and not telling you about it. It's how we access the Marinmap data warehouse and pull that data into our maps. Think of it as a handshake at the speed of light that leaves a $20 in your palm! That'll leave the nerds rolling their eyes at the inaccuracy, won't it? Back to the Community Base Map, that's a very pretty zoomable/printable base for presentation graphics as well as sort of a google background for the...

Re: My First Blog Entry
I love this site. It has so much useful information that I can get lost in it, in a good way, for hours at a time.

I am wondering who pays for data, the programing, the hosting.....this cannot be cheap. Someone in the county said it was not related to them, that it was private.

Thank you.
Re: My First Blog Entry
Found it. Good idea! Would like to be able to set a profile. I always do pretty much the same thing on Marin Map. (I'm a real estate appraiser.) Also, there were some things about the old interface that were more convenient. Functionality that used to be on the "surface" is now buried, and that translates to more time spent digging out info.
